The Meaning of Our Tattoo

New Page 1

A great amount of time and effort was invested into designing our tattoo together.  We required something that had much significance for us and was deep in Celtic basis.  Many a days were passed corresponding by email as we worked on this endeavor together.

We decided on the Triquetra (trinity knot) as the foundation of our tattoo.

Triquetra (try-KWET-ra) means "three corned" in Latin.  This symbol is used throughout Celtic history and has many different meanings.  For us, two connotations drew us strongly to this symbol.  The three points of the trinity knot representing Mind, body & soul and that of life, death and rebirth, tied all closely together.

The trinity knot can also be found on various jewelry, keepsakes, possessions, etc. of ours.

Then, around the outside of the trinity knot, we had three words adorned, Mo Anam Cara, one on each side.  Mo Anam Cara is Irish and is translated to English to mean “My Soulmate”.  Even previous to our tattoos, this was our accepted expression and the basis for the title of this website.

Throughout this website, you may notice the expression, Buhr Anam Cara when signed by me.  Mo is Irish for “my” and when replaced by Buhr (Irish for “your”), simply means “Your Soulmate”.  To view other Irish interpretations of words and phrases used on this website, please visit the link, Site Glossary.

To finish it off, the first two portions of the tattoo were tightly enclosed by an eternity knot circle.  Eternity knots are used all throughout Irish history.  There is no eternity knot like ours in the entire world as it was designed by us and represents the never ending circle of life, the repeated crossings of the spiritual and physical paths in our lives, and the permanence and continuum of our life, love and faith, with no beginning, nor no end.

Just like the trinity knot, various kinds of eternity knots can be found on various jewelry, keepsakes, and possessions of ours.

We then had our tattoo placed in the exact position on both our bodies, on the middle of our back, on the top vertebra bone where the neck meets the shoulders, to provide it all-embracing significance.
